SCA’s Youth in the Great Outdoors AmeriCorps Stewardship Teams program was developed in 2011 to provide hands-on conservation projects and educational programming that promotes stewardship values and sustainable practices within our public lands and communities with the goal of engaging our nation’s youth in these activities.
The Youth in the Great Outdoors AmeriCorps Stewardship Teams provide 10-month internships in geographically diverse regions of the country, including rural, suburban, and urban areas. Although the Stewardship Teams program is not a residential corps, members come together for trainings and monthly calls and stay connected virtually throughout the program year.
The Stewardship Teams will take action to connect the public to the great outdoors in two ways: (1) by engaging youth in hands-on conservation work that protects and restores our land, water, and ecosystems, and (2) by engaging youth in outreach campaigns, events, workshops, environmental education, interpretive programming, and other similar awareness strategies.
Members bring skills from a range of disciplines including trail building, invasive species removal, inventorying and mapping, greenway and bike path planning and design, curriculum development and delivery, outdoor recreation coordination, and vegetation propagation.
Members of the Stewardship Teams receive the following trainings or certifications:
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and must pass a background check. Other requirements vary by position.
In addition to transportation to and from the internship location, members receive a weekly living allowance, medical insurance, and can be eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award. Housing and other allowances vary by position.
