ARLINGTON, Va.– The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Emily Ten Eyck as Director of Risk and Safety Management, effective Oct. 12, 2026.
“I am excited for the leadership Emily will bring to the Director of Risk and Safety role. I am looking forward to supporting her vision for the team and continuing to strengthen the work of the risk and safety department,” said Anne Morrison, SCA Senior Director of Enterprise Operations & Risk. “Emily approaches risk and safety with both rigor and humanity. She considers the people involved and the impact decisions have on them, while bringing the clarity, composure, and practical judgment needed to navigate complex situations. Her experience managing programs, developing training courses, leading safety work directly, and collaborating across teams makes her an excellent fit.”
Ten Eyck is a risk and safety professional with expertise in safety system design, incident response and management, and organizational learning. She brings an analytical, systems-oriented approach to identifying emerging risks, strengthening safety processes and culture, and translating complex information into practical recommendations for organizational improvement. She will focus on field operational and safety risk assessment, safety program implementation, incident response and review, and associated continual learning and improvement efforts for the SCA.
“I am honored to step into the role of Director of Risk and Safety Management at such a dynamic time for the SCA. Safety is not merely a policy; it is a core value that touches every aspect of what we do,” Ten Eyck said. “I look forward to continuing to partner with our talented teams across the organization to build upon our strong foundation of delivering impactful, transformational conservation experiences for our crew members.”
Prior to being named Director of Risk and Safety Management, Ten Eyck served as the SCA’s Senior Risk Management Officer. During that time, she developed and refined systems to prepare members for their positions, trained and mentored staff in field-level safety management, and built a sustainable internal program-review framework.
Before joining the SCA in 2022, Ten Eyck developed her risk and safety skills while managing extended wilderness tripping programs, including the YMCA of the North and the Voyageur Outward Bound School. In addition to her work with the SCA, she is also pursuing graduate-level study focused on risk management, international relations, economics and public policy.
