The Student Conservation Association first launched its Wildland Fire Academy in Fall 2023. This intensive fuels reduction training program is designed to introduce young people to careers in fire and fuels reduction with the U.S. Forest Service. The SCA kicked off its fourth season this spring with 14 teams.
These paid positions offer excellent opportunities for program participants to gain the training, certifications, and hands-on experience necessary to launch a career in wildland fire. The Academy recruits, hires and trains dozens of crew members who complete thousands of hours of wildland fire prevention and suppression.
The Forest Service has been managing wildland fires on National Forests and Grasslands for more than 100 years. As the wildland fire management environment has changed, there are now longer fire seasons, larger fires, more extreme fire behavior and more wildfires closer to residential areas. Reducing wildfire risks and improving fire management infrastructure directly protects local communities from the devastating effects of wildfires.
Vegetation management and controlled burns help restore natural fire patterns, which are essential for maintaining the health and diversity of local ecosystems. This restoration supports the overall ecological balance and promotes sustainable forest management. Meanwhile, ensuring that effective fire management efforts are in place can protect vulnerable communities that may be disproportionately affected by wildfire smoke and the impacts of severe fires.
For the past 55 years, the SCA and the Forest Service have partnered together to protect and restore vital forests and grasslands nationwide. In doing so, we have jointly provided transformative service opportunities for young people from every corner of our country.
