At the SCA, we never miss an opportunity to celebrate our one, beautiful planet. For Earth Month this year, we were fortunate to partner with supporters from coast to coast who joined us in hands-on conservation projects to help greenify our communities.
Here’s a roundup of some of the work we accomplished together.

The SCA’s Urban Green program in the Bay Area is helping reduce the urban heat island effect in Hayward, California, by working alongside 21 volunteers from Cox Automotive, Inc., to plant 12 trees, including two fruiting cherry trees, at Cherryland Park.

For Arbor Day, the SCA’s Urban Green program in Chicago partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation, Cox Enterprises and the Chicago Urban League to plant 10 new swamp white and burr oak trees, mulch 60 young trees and give away 50 saplings. One volunteer from Cox Enterprises remarked, “I never knew about Big Marsh Bike Park! I’m glad I have a reason to come back and bike around to see the trees we planted.”

For Earth Month, the SCA’s Urban Green program in Washington, D.C., partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation and United Airlines to plant fourteen trees and distribute fifteen more at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts in Vienna, Virginia.

The SCA’s Urban Green program in New York City hosted a volunteer clean-up event at Naval Cemetery Landscape in Brooklyn, New York, where participants cleared six 42-gallon bags of invasive mugwort, multiflora rose and porcelain berry and cutback a half-acre of meadow to encourage wildflower growth.

With support from bp America, the SCA’s Urban Green program in Northwest Indiana brought together 66 volunteers, including 37 students from East Chicago Central High School, to plant 29 trees at Roxanna Park. The crew planted nine varieties of trees, including five varieties of oak, bald cypress, white pine, sycamore and yellow birch.

In honor of Earth Day, the SCA’s Urban Green program in Seattle partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation and T-Mobile to plant trees at the Wetmore Community Farm. Along with community members, 56 volunteers from T-Mobile planted fruiting trees and other native species, including grape, huckleberry, pear, plum, persimmon and apple trees. Flowering dogwood and magnolia trees were also planted to help beautify the area and attract pollinators.
