NEW YORK — The Student Conservation Association (SCA) today announced that Con Edison awarded the organization $100,000 to support its New York City Urban Green program, helping continue providing green conservation jobs and environmental education for youth. The gift marks five years of partnership.
“We are incredibly grateful to Con Edison for their generous support. This vital funding will allow the SCA to continue our transformative Urban Green programming while building a clean energy workforce dedicated to mitigating the impact of extreme weather events and improving climate resiliency,” said SCA President and CEO Lidia Soto-Harmon. “This year marks five years of impact in New York City, and we are thrilled to continue our partnership with Con Edison to better protect the communities we serve.”

For over 30 years, New York City Urban Green has provided thousands of young people with paid green jobs, career readiness skills, and hands-on conservation experience. Program participants protect habitat, restore hiking trails, collect tree survey data, and engage the community in stewardship. This competitive program equips participants with valuable knowledge and experience to make a difference in their community and beyond.
“Con Edison is committed to helping young people gain hands on experience protecting the environment while preparing for clean energy and environmental resiliency careers that strengthen our communities,” said Hilary Ayala, director of Corporate Philanthropy and Employee Engagement at Con Edison. “We are proud to celebrate five years of collaboration on this important program and the students who benefit from it.”
The SCA’s Urban Green program provides innovative workforce development opportunities for youth and young adults interested in conservation. Our Urban Green programs include single-day service projects, seasonal work and year-long internships or fellowships in major metropolitan cities.
During the season, program participants explore green job opportunities, build leadership skills, gain valuable credentials, and learn about the local environment through environmental education, conservation field trips, and outdoor recreation. With this additional support from Con Edison, New York City Urban Green can highlight new clean energy pathways while helping communities prepare for extreme weather and restore ecosystems.
