ARLINGTON, Va. – The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Anne Morrison as the Director of Risk and Safety Management, effective Dec. 2, 2024.
Ms. Morrison will focus on field operational and safety risk assessment, safety program implementation, incident response and review, and associated continual learning and improvement efforts for the SCA, the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and young adults.
“I am honored to join the SCA at a time when conservation work and impactful experiences for youth are so important. Safety and risk management are foundational to the success of programming,” Ms. Morrison said. “Everyone has a role to play in the safety system. I am excited to partner with the team and support the culture of learning that is integral to a strong safety structure.”
Before joining the SCA, Ms. Morrison was Senior Director of Programs and Safety at the Northwest Outward Bound School in Portland, Oregon. There, she was responsible for managing safety systems and culture while evaluating risks and setting norms for safety management. As an educator, Ms. Morrison focuses on the values of learning and accountability.
As a young person, Ms. Morrison discovered conservation work through the Vermont Youth Conservation Corps, where she spent three summers working on backcountry trail crews. While there, she also served as a crew leader with a work-based education program through a partnership with alternative high schools to support students on their way to graduation.
During her extensive tenure with Outward Bound, Ms. Morrison served as Safety Director, Program Director, Course Advisor and various other field-based roles. In 2023, she received the Outward Bound national John McGrory Award for significant contributions to the safety systems of Outward Bound programs.
Ms. Morrison holds a Master’s in Education with a School Counseling license from Lewis and Clark College and a Bachelor’s of Science in Environmental Science from the University of Vermont.
