HOUSTON – The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is teaming up with actor Kevin Bacon’s SixDegrees.Org charity to host an emergency preparedness hurricane kit building distribution event for residents of Houston. September is National Preparedness Month and also marks the peak of hurricane season. Following a summer of record heat and drought, Houston could see unprecedented flooding if hit with heavy rains.

Members of the public are invited to pick up a free hurricane kit at the SCA Houston Office, 5208 Harrisburg Blvd., from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29.

“Through the Basic Kindness Program, SixDegrees.Org empowers communities and corporate partners to create essential resources like these Hurricane kits, fostering connection and deepening resilience in the communities they call home,” said Stacy Huston, Executive Director of SixDegrees.Org. “In collaboration with the Student Conservation Association, we aim to prepare and protect those most vulnerable in the face of natural disasters. Together, we’re building a more equitable and compassionate world, one essential care kit at a time.”

As one of the most climate-impacted cities in the country, Houston has experienced the increasing intensity and frequency of extreme weather-related events, particularly hurricanes.

“We are committed to enhancing the well-being of communities affected by climate change and fortifying the very heart of our beautiful city. Houston’s resilience has been put to the test time and again, underscoring the urgency of preparedness and community support,” said Valeria Casas, SCA Community Program Manager for Texas. “These kits, thoughtfully curated and distributed by SCA Houston and SixDegrees.Org, contain essential items and information crucial for weathering a storm safely. Together, we can make our city stronger, greener, and more resilient in the face of natural disaster.”

The SCA began fielding local community conservation programs in Houston in the early 2000s. Since then, hundreds of local youth have completed an array of conservation service projects across the city, including restoring green spaces. Participants learn to work as members of a diverse team of peers while gaining knowledge of public land resources and local and global environmental issues. These young people walked away with the knowledge of how to serve their communities through conservation service work and gained a strong connection to the great outdoors through environmental education.
