With June’s arrival, SCA welcomes our 63rd summer of service. This one, of course, is unlike any other.

Most intern and corps positions are beginning their terms with a minimum 14 days of precautionary remote teleservice. Conservation crews have been reduced in both number and size, and primarily are comprised of local participants. We have instituted upgraded protocols to safeguard our all volunteers and implemented virtual programming for members where conditions do not permit field activities.

Although SCA placements are temporarily restricted by the coronavirus, our mission remains boundless. SCA is committed to building the next generation of conservation leaders and inspiring lifelong stewardship of our environment and communities by engaging young people in hands-on service to the land.

It is also important to note at this time that justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion have long been among the cornerstones of SCA. Last year, we embarked on a plan to better recognize and eradicate racial biases in our own culture and to forge a more diverse and inclusive conservation community at large, one that embraces outdoor access, opportunity, and justice for all. As we advance this effort, we hope it will contribute to the reforms our nation needs to move forward.

We call on everyone to draw from the strength and solace of nature as you assess what you can do to assist in this process, and to take the actions you deem most helpful.

Stay healthy. Stay safe.
