REVISED – (Chinle, AZ) July 29, 2022 – The Student Conservation Association (SCA) confirmed that on the afternoon of July 27th, a Student Conservation Association (SCA) crew leader, drove a vehicle into the mouth of the Canyon de Chelly National Monument and the vehicle became stranded. SCA is still gathering details about the incident but has established there were no injuries, and all crew members safely vacated the area. SCA is devoting all necessary resources to respond to the incident including working with park officials to safely remove the vehicle.

The crew involved in this incident worked on several park projects that included trail maintenance and restoration, repairs to park structures, and visitor outreach. The actions of the crew leader, who is no longer affiliated with the organization, are inconsistent with the values of SCA. SCA deeply values its relationship with the National Monument and the surrounding community, partnering together for over a decade to engage young people in meaningful conservation service work that supports park and community priorities.

Founded in 1957, the Student Conservation Association (SCA) is America’s oldest and largest youth conservation organization. SCA conserves lands and transforms lives by empowering young people of all backgrounds to plan, act, and lead while they protect our natural and cultural resources. For more, visit www.thesca.org.
