The Veterans HistoriCorps program is a new pilot program and partnership among SCA, HistoriCorps, and the National Forest Service, engaging teams of military veterans in restoring historic places throughout the country.

This project will engage post 9-11 US military veterans with SCA, the US Forest Service, and historic preservation volunteers who will be working at three sites. Over the course of 12 weeks, veterans will develop valuable trade skills under the supervision and direction of HistoriCorps staff. The Veterans Historic Preservation Team consists of seven military veterans, who will spend 3-4 weeks in each location before moving on to the next work site. After completing orientation and training, the crew travels as a group from project to project, executing a specific scope of work under the guidance of two skilled HistoriCorps preservation professionals.

The team completes the actual historic preservation work which allows certain buildings and structures to be opened to the public for historical interpretation. The members gain valuable hands-on skills that can further their careers in a variety of technical trade disciplines. The program helps veterans to build upon training received in the armed forces, to secure employment in conservation fields, and to develop into highly qualified conservation leaders.

For the majority of the program the team will be tenting in campgrounds near the work sites. All tools and camping gear will be provided with the exception of personal items. Members must be in good physical condition and willing and able to live and work in all weather conditions. In addition to transportation to and from the internship locations, members will receive a weekly living allowance and can be eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award.
