Baltimore Conservation Leadership Corps (BCLC)
SCA fielded its first community conservation program in Baltimore in 2007, partnering with Civic Works, a local community nonprofit, and Johnson Controls, Inc. Since that first year, 30 or more high school students from Baltimore City have participated in the BCLC program each summer. Thanks to the Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks, Friends Groups of local parks, environmental organizations, schools, youth development organizations, and numerous community groups, BCLC continues to provide conservation opportunities to young people in Baltimore City every summer.
Baltimore Conservation Leadership Corps is a summer program that runs for six weeks each summer. Crew members are paid for their service and participate Monday-Friday during these six weeks. Members serve at parks in and around Baltimore City. They spend each day engaged in hands-on conservation work outdoors, including trail building, park maintenance and improvement, urban agriculture, and many other exciting projects. Crew members also participate in job readiness training including exploring green career opportunities, building leadership skills, and learning about the local environment through field trips, outdoor recreation, and service projects.
During the program, participants will learn how to work as members of a diverse team of peers; gain knowledge of public land resources, environmental issues, and career readiness skills; increase understanding of environmental and trail restoration techniques; acquire experience in public service and outdoor recreation; and develop valuable professional skills through teambuilding and leadership activities.
Trainings Often Offered:
- Resume Building
- Leave No Trace (LNT) Outdoor Ethics
- Financial Literacy
- Trail Skills
- Invasive Species Removal
Applicants must be 15-18 years of age and in high school immediately before the summer. Applicants must submit a paper application; attend a volunteer service day and an in-person interview. Candidates who are 18 during the time of the program must also pass a criminal background check.
