The intern will develop outreach and interpretation materials to communicate the value of the Congaree Wilderness and other wilderness areas in South Carolina in support of the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act and beyond. The intern will partner with interagency staff in South Carolina (National Park Service, US Forest Service and US Fish and Wildlife Service) to provide educational programs and materials such as displays, interpretive programs, web and social media content and special event planning. We are looking for an outgoing individual that can share their passion with the public.

The intern will work primarily at Congaree National Park, designing, coordinating, and implementing a series of programs, events and products aimed at celebrating and promoting public awareness of wilderness.  The intern will design, and prepare for production, SC Wilderness exhibit panels for use throughout the state at federal agencies and outreach events. The intern may also design an SC wilderness exhibit for the Columbia Metropolitan Airport. The intern will produce products such as rack cards, website and social media content for the partner sites. In addition, the intern will have the opportunity to assist Congaree National Park interpretive rangers in staffing the visitor center, roving park trails, and conducting off-site community programs. The intern will have the opportunity to travel to wilderness areas on federal lands in the upstate and low country in South Carolina and work with staff from the US Forest Service and US Fish and Wildlife Service.

Desired skills: Experience with Adobe Creative Suite software (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) would be a plus. Comfort with web and social media is ideal. Friendly, out-going demeanor with the public; able to initiate formal and informal conversations with ease in roving park trails, providing wilderness regulations and LNT principles, participating in off-site events and festivals, and meeting with interagency and community partners.
Intern must be comfortable working cooperatively with partners including US Fish and Wildlife Service and US Forest Service, Congaree National Park staff, park volunteers, and park visitors. Cooperative work will be both in person and via phone/email.

  • The intern will be housed and supervised at Congaree National Park in Hopkins, SC. Congaree National Park protects the largest intact expanse of old growth bottomland hardwood forest remaining in the southeastern United States. Waters from the Congaree and Wateree Rivers sweep through the floodplain, carrying nutrients and sediments that nourish and rejuvenate this ecosystem and support the growth of national and state champion trees. Approximately 82% of Congaree’s 27,000 acres have been designated as wilderness.

Access to grocery shopping, post office and other needs is within 15 miles of the park in the Columbia, SC area. Columbia, home of the University of South Carolina, provides all of the amenities one would expect in a small city including shopping, restaurants, cultural and recreational opportunities.

  • Intern will receive NPS, USFWS and USFS mission training, Wilderness Act training, informal interpretation training, and have the opportunity to shadow rangers at Congaree. The intern will also have the opportunity to visit USFS and USFWS areas in SC.
  • Hiking and paddling are popular outdoor activities in the area. SC beaches are just 1.5 hours away, as is the mountains in upstate SC and western NC. Cultural opportunities are also abundant in Columbia in nearby cities.
