The intern’s responsibilities will include: assisting in opening, closing, and operating the Visitor Center; selling passes; assisting with interpretive and education programs; providing information; maintaining indoor and outdoor facilities; helping develop written material; and routinely working with volunteers, a large Friends group, refuge staff and the public. The position will also work with the Supervisory Park Ranger in overall planning efforts for the visitor services program, possibly including the Transit Plan, the Visitor Services plan, Road Safety Audit and/or the design of our new visitor center. Some weekend work will be required. EDUCATIONAL AND RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES: The refuge is located about one hour from the major central Florida attractions and about 1/2 hour from Cocoa and Daytona Beaches. Birdwatching, hiking, fishing, biking, kayaking and other outdoor recreation opportunities are available on the refuge and nearby. A Driver license is required and housing is provided.

  • Intern will receive training in the operation of a major visitor center; will also be exposed to other departments and assist with their work on as-needed basis. Other training may include CPR/First Aid & fee program operation.
  • The refuge will provide opportunities for the intern to work in all areas of refuge operations (biology, maintenance, resource management, etc.) though visitor services is the primary focus. Outdoor recreation abounds in the local area.
