Your duties will include: assisting environmental education lessons; coordinating and executing monthly special events; opening, closing, and working in the visitor center; assisting visitors and answering questions; restock and inventory on brochures; answering phones; filing; assisting with the compilation of administrative reports; and any other administrative tasks. 

Please note that there is a $6 toll to cross the causeway onto Sanibel Island.  Tolls for personal trips will not be reimbursed.
  • The position will be located at the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Isalnd in sunny southwest Florida. The refuge consists of over 6,400 acres of mangrove forest, submerged seagrass beds, cordgrass marshes, and West Indian hardwood hammocks. Approximately 2,800 acres of the refuge were designated by Congress as a Wilderness Area. The refuge is world famous for the spectacular migratory bird populations that visit the refuge, particularly during the winter months.
  • Informal training in environmental interpretation and education and in biological data collection, analysis and interpretation.
  • Educational opportunities include exposure to careers within the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and learning about the plants and animals that occur on Sanibel Island. Recreational opportunities include hiking, biking, kayaking, and bird watching.
  • Professional development opportunities include: exposure to the differenct career opportunities working within the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s National Wildlfie Refuge System; experience working as a park ranger by developing and implementing environmental interpretation and education programs; and experience working as a biological technician by conducting biological surveys.
