Devils Postpile National Monument
Position ID
You will provide support for daily operations to enhance visitor services by providing interpretive services and vistor information at the Mammoth Lakes Welcome Center, an interagency visitor center in the town of Mammoth Lakes. You will also presenting interpretive and educational outreach programs in the local community. Outreach programs include Story Hour at the local library, community outreach programs at the Welcome Center, and field-based educational programs including snowshoe walks and other winter-based programming. You will also assist visitors with wilderness trip planning, wilderness education, and work with the monument’s Firstbloom program, a field-based educational outreach program with the Bishop Paiute Tribe. 
  • Mammoth Lakes is a beautiful resort community located at an elevation of around 8,000 feet in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It is located about 3 hours south of Reno Nevada and 6 hours northeast of Los Angeles, CA. The closest airport is the Mammoth Yosemite Airport and is about 7 miles from Mammoth Lakes. The summer climate is pleasant with high temperatures between 75 and 85 degrees.
  • Intern will receive training in the following areas: Formal and Informal Interpretation, Resources of Devils Postpile and the Sierra, Welcome Center operations, winter safety, wilderness interpretation.
  • See training section. Recreational opportunities include snowshoeing and skiing. Within a 45 minute drive, some hiking opportunities may be available depending on snow conditions.
