Your primary responsibilities will be to staff the visitor center, imparting park and area information, describing rules and regulations of the park, planning trips and answering a wide variety of questions.  You will collect park entrance fees, perform sales in the bookstore, conduct hiking patrols as well as outlier patrols on unimproved roads (vehicle provided), provide roving interpretation, and assist with search and rescue if needed.  Opportunities may exist for presenting additional formal interpretive activities.  You will perform some minor maintenance work as required and assist with resource management projects.  As Hovenweep has just been designated a gold tier dark-sky park, individuals with astronomy experience including operations of a Celestron telescope are encouraged to apply.  

EDUCATIONAL/RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES: 
You will have the opportunity for field trips during the initial training.  You are encouraged to explore the surrounding public lands to become a better source of area information.  Hovenweep National Monument is located within two hours drive of three National Parks (Canyonlands, Arches, Mesa Verde), two National Monuments (Natural Bridges and Canyons of the Ancients) and two Navajo Tribal Park (Monument Valley) and Ute Tribal Park. Also nearby are three mountain ranges, four wild and scenic rivers, and numerous National Forest and BLM wilderness and primitive areas.  This position is not eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award.

  • Intern will receive training in visitor services, interpretation, cultural and natural resources, safety, and some search and rescue.
  • Hiking, biking, rafting, canoeing, climbing, and jeeping are readily available from the park. Intern can tour many area state&national park, as well as surrounding public lands that offer beautiful scenery and recreational opportunities.
