Stones River National Battlefield
The intern will work with park staff, volunteers, and other student interns to help manage natural resources in a manner that improves the condition of the cultural landscapes of Stones River National Battleﬁeld. Natural resource management activities will primarily consist of invasive plant control and maintenance of native landscaping (90% or more of time in position). The intern will gain signiﬁcant experience in invasive and native plant identiﬁcation, implementing invasive plant control strategies, herbicide application, and native landscaping techniques. Other duties (10% or less of time in position) may consist of: installing, maintaining, and operating resource management equipment; recording ﬁeld observations of plants, animals, habitats, cultural sites, and resource conditions; collecting and organizing ﬁeld data; monitoring rare and endangered plant species; assisting with plant and animal inventories; assisting with GIS/GPS delineation; and assisting with wildlife management activities. The intern may be assigned a special project based on park needs and the volunteer’s individual interests and skill level.
Stones River National Battleﬁeld is a 650 acre park that commemorates the Battle of Stones River, one of the most important battles of the American Civil War. It is located in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, a rapidly growing urban area near the geographic center of the state, located about 30 miles south of Nashville. Murfreesboro is home to Middle Tennessee State University, one of the largest colleges in the state.
National Park Service developmental training online. The ﬁrst full week will be orientation training. On the job training in natural resource management. Training in proper use of equipment and tools. Pesticide applicator training.
Murfreesboro has all the entertainment, shopping, and dining a typical medium sized college town might have.
