The National Park Service preserves and manages our country’s outstanding natural, historical, and recreational resources. This internship will help ensure that visitors have a meaningful, safe and memorable experience at Tonto National Monument.

Duties include, but are not limited to, staffing the visitor center desk, greeting and orienting visitors to the national monument, providing informal interpretation, collecting entrance fees and selling interpretive materials; researching, developing and presenting interpretive programs to the visiting public (guided walks, tours, demonstrations, etc.); performing roving trail patrols; working on assigned projects that could include research, interpretive writing, and assisting with a resource management project.

  • The Monument is over 1120 acres of Sonoran desert environment that is comprised of diverse plant and animals including many species of cacti, snakes, bees, scorpions, lizards and tarantulas. The Monument ranges in elevation from 2300’ to 4000’ and temperatures in this high desert location may range from 30 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The Monument is near Roosevelt, Arizona, 125 miles east of Phoenix and 30 miles NW of Globe on Highway 88/188; services near the Monument are very limited.
  • By working with the Interpretation division as well as other NPS staff, the SCA intern will gain an understanding of real life application of working in a federal land management agency. Training in interpretive skills will be provided.
  • Nearby Roosevelt Lake and Tonto National Forest offer many recreational opportunities. Many other state and local historical and recreational areas are within a day’s drive.
