Members of the Salmon-Challis AmeriCorps Forest Training Center will have the opportunity to further their passion for the environment and love of the outdoors through hands-on conservation service work. Members will gain outdoor leadership experience and a multidisciplinary training in a variety of land management facets, which will include a mix of the following: forestry and fuel loads, rangeland management, wildlife management/biology, data collection using Trimble GPS units, trail work and recreation. Members will have opportunities to try out many of these resource protection areas while focusing most of their attention on one or two areas. Members will also maintain and improve the center itself. The goal of this experience is to develop a strong base of knowledge and skills, therefore preparing members to become professional level field staff for conservation organizations (government, non-profit, and private sector). Perform outdoor conservation projects, 85%, participate in training opportunities, 15%. Position is physically demanding and will occasionally require evening and weekend work, camping out for up to 8 days at a time, off trail hiking, and some interaction the general public. Benefits include: Room and board for the length of the program, $90/week subsistence allowance, AmeriCorps Education Award of up to $2,865 (upon successful completion of 900 hour program); health insurance.
Trainings included: Wilderness First Responder, Leave No Trace Trainer, Cross Cut Saw,  Multiple Indicator Monitoring (MIM), SCA Work Skills, GPS ArcPad Data Collection, GIS Field Applications, Fence Construction/Repair, Orienteering, Government Motor Vehicle Operator, and other trainings as available throughout the season.
Due to training and successful education award eligibility, start date is not flexible.
  • The Salmon-Challis AmeriCorps Forest Training Center is situated in the Salmon-Challis National Forest along the border in east-central Idaho. With its 4.3 million acres, including over a million acres of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness area (the largest wilderness area in the contiguous US), the Salmon-Challis NF is prime country for those who enjoy the outdoors. 2.5 hours south of Missoula, MT. 4 hours west of Yellowstone NP.
