This position is a vital member of the Interpretation and Education Division at Fort Union National Monument and tailored for an individual interested in learning about and exploring careers within the field of education and interpretation on public lands.  Successful completion of this internship will provide skills and experience useful in pursuing these types of career options.  Duties: 35% . Using established curricula and under the guidance of the Education Specialist, prepares and presents lesson plans to visiting classroom students.  The park has a newly emerging curriculum based education program and this intern will help develop it.  Assist with the coordination of a Junior Ranger camp for local youth 35% Staffs visitor center to meet and greet visitors, collect fees and provide orientation, information, and informal interpretation.Develops a variety of formal and informal interpretive programs and presents them to a wide variety of audiences, Plus —  participate in living history interpretation 15% conduct roving informal interpretive and resource protection patrols along the forts main trails. 15%  Assist with the creation (writing and formating) of the bi-annual park newsletter utilizing CS6 (InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop).

This position is not eligible for an AmeriCorps Education Award.

  • This position is located at Fort Union National Monument in Watrous, New Mexico. Fort Union was established in 1851 to establish a federal presence in the region and along the Santa Fe Trail. It is located near Santa Fe and Taos both areas noted for the arts.
  • Eppley Institute, 2 weeks of introductry training, on the job training, and online training for CS6. CPR & First Aid.
  • Interns will learn a variety of educational skills through training an working alongside experienced staff. Fort Union is also near the best hiking and skiing (Taos, Santa Fe, and Angel Fire) in the region.
