Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve

GIS Intern:
Full-time, 52-week position will assist the National Park Service Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve, Resource Stewardship and Partnership Division in Jacksonville, FL .  The Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve encompasses over 46,000 acres almost entirely within Duval County and includes Fort Caroline National Memorial.
The GIS Intern will assist with ongoing and future projects by making maps (cartographic products), creating online mapping products, and collecting GPS data.  The Intern will also perform some basic data management duties such as organizing/updating the preserve basedata, performing QA/QC of attributes, metadata creation, and transferring data to an SDE database.  The Intern will also assist with technical support to preserve employees.
Any applicant needs to have knowledge of the Windows environment (Windows 7) and be able to navigate Windows Explorer, access the Internet, and perform common tasks such as cut, copy, paste, and delete.  Applicant needs to have been introduced to ArcGIS for Desktop (9.x ok, but 10.x preferred).  Most of the work will involve ArcCatalog and ArcMap.  Applicant should feel comfortable viewing and editing GIS data.  Applicant should feel comfortable opening attribute tables and manipulating attributes.  There is a strong possibility of using SDE technology and creating/managing map services, but prior knowledge is not necessary.  Intern will be trained on creating FGDC-compliant metadata.
This position will require most hours sitting (or standing if preferred) at a computer.  Intern will have a few hours a week to receive training on GIS/GPS skills of their choosing.  Travel or field work within the preserve will be required with this position.
  • Timucuan Preserve Headquarters in Jacksonville, Florida. The primary location will be indoors at a desk, but will also include some field work and travel to other facilities within the preserve.
  • The member will have access to dozens of ESRI classes that can advance their creer and can choose to be trained in GPS technology and field techniques.
  • The member will have access to park tours, educational park programs, history of the park, field trips to other partner sites, use of park kayaks and other arts and recreational pursuits within the northeast florida area.
