Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site
Position ID
This position will provide GIS support to Grant Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site, just outside of Deer Lodge, MT.  This position will provide geospatial technical support to in support of park management, resource management, facilities, and visitor use.  This position involves a variety of GIS work including data collection, data management, map production, and analysis.  In particular, tasks will include:  creating maps about park resources, creating and/or editing GIS data, organizing GIS data in a common data structure, creating metadata for park GIS data, and collecting data in the field using GPS, including post-processing and correcting GPS data.  This position will work with the NPS Intermountain Region GIS Division on implementation of GIS data standards, naming conventions, and NPS GIS data management at the park.  A working knowledge of ArcGIS 10 or higher is essential and experience with File Geodatabases, editing, and map creation is highly desirable.
  • Grant-Kohrs Ranch was founded in 1860 by pioneer stockgrower John Grant, succeeded in 1866 by cattle baron Conrad Kohrs and preserved 1940-1972 by Hereford rancher Conrad Kohrs Warren, Grant-Kohrs Ranch joined the National Park Service on August 25, 1972. Congress authorized this site’s establishment to: “…provide an understanding of the frontier cattle era of the Nation’s history, to preserve the Grant-Kohrs Ranch, and to interpret the nationally significant values thereof for the benefit and inspiration of present and future generations.”
    Grant-Kohrs Ranch is located directly off I-90 midway between Yellowstone NP and Glacier NP in Deer Lodge, Montana. It is about an hour drive from Helena, MT and Missola and is easily accessible from the interstate. Deer Lodge Montana is a full service community. There are gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants, hotels, campgrounds, and a Post Office located just minutes from the park. There are also some U.S. Forest Service (Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest) campgrounds within a 20 mile radius of Deer Lodge.
  • On the job training on developing and incorporating map products into park planning will be provided. An introduction to the NPS and regional GIS standards will be provided by the Intermountain Region GIS Division at the beginning of the position.
  • Abundant recreational opportunities (hiking, fishing, hunting, skiing) are available in the region. The University of Montana at Missoula is only an hour away.
