This position will provide GIS support to Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument staff to support all aspects of park management, resources, facilities, and visitor use.  This position involves a variety of GIS work including data collection, data management, map production, and analysis.  In particular, tasks will include:  creating maps about park resources, creating and/or editing GIS data, organizing GIS data in a common data structure, creating metadata for park GIS data, and collecting data in the field using GPS, including post-processing and correcting GPS data.  This position will work with the Intermountain Region GIS Program on implementation of GIS data standards, naming conventions, and NPS GIS data management at the park.  A working knowledge of ArcGIS 10 or higher is essential and experience with File Geodatabases, editing, and map creation is highly desirable.
  • Located in southeastern Montana, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument (LIBI) memorializes the site of the Battle of the Little Bighorn which took place on June 25-26, 1876 between the United States Seventh Cavalry Regiment led by Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer, and the Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho.
    Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument preserves and interprets the near pristine field of engagement that holds a unique place in the national consciousness as a high-water mark in the 400-year struggle between Euro-Americans and Native Americans. The park includes critical combat sites, archaeology artifacts, and numerous monuments commemorating the combatants, including the first congressionally designated Indian Memorial, which honors Native American perspectives on the battle and its meanings for native peoples.
    The park is located 18 miles south of shopping and medical facilities are available in Hardin, Montana (pop 3,384) 18 miles south of Crow Agency. Montana’s largest city, Billings (pop 100,000), is 60 miles northwest of Crow Agency via Interstate-90 and has major shopping facilities. Sheridan, Wyoming (pop 17,000), 70 miles south via Interstate-90, also has major shopping facilities.
  • On the job training on developing and incorporating map products into park planning will be provided. An introduction to the NPS and regional GIS standards will be provided by the Intermountain Region GIS Program at the beginning of the position.
  • Abundant recreational opportunities (hiking, fishing, hunting, skiing) are available in the region, including within Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area located 45 miles from Crow Agency.
