Interns are given a range of field-based and office work assignments as well as helpful supervision and mentoring. Field work may include strenuous physical activity under adverse conditions (high heat, high humidity, and biting insects). Duties will primarily consist of treating invasive non-native plants with herbicide from backpack sprayers, among other treatment types. Travel will be frequent to a variety of National Park Service units in the Mid-Atlantic area of the Northeast Region.  The ratio of field work to office work will be approximately 75/25. While on travel the team will stay in hotels or government housing depending on availability.

Interns are encouraged to attend NPS-sponsored training and to take part in activities and programs housed near the EPMTs.

Interns should be physically fit to work long days in high heat and humidity. Interns should feel comfortable in the field including backcountry and wilderness areas.  Successful applicants will also possess strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple and competing priorities. Strong verbal and writing skills are important along with an ability to work well as a member of a diverse professional team.

During the winter months work will include data management activities. The intern will work with GIS and an Access database as well as with paper and electronic files. Work assignments may include research assistance in conducting scientific literature reviews, collecting data and/or performing data analysis, contributing to the development of reports, and assisting in the development of communication materials.
