Interns in this position will participate on a seasonal prescribed burn crew that will be used to conduct prescribed burns in Alabama, Florida, and potentially Georgia. The crew will travel extensively throughout Alabama to conduct prescribed burns on TNC preserves and assist TNC partners such as private landowners, state, and federal agencies. The Burn Crew Member participates in wildland fire operations which include ignition, control, mop-up, suppression, monitoring, etc. The Burn Crew Member will participate in preparing fire lines, maintaining equipment, post-burn monitoring and other tasks. The Burn Crew Member may perform other preserve management duties when conditions are not conducive to prescribed fire. The crew will be based at Splinter Hill Bog Preserve near Perdido, Alabama. Each crew member must live on site with other Burn Crew Members, the Burn Crew Manager, and the Burn Boss (or other command position) to maximize the crew’s effectiveness and to provide a general security presence. Interns must be qualified as a Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2).

  • The primary duty location is Perdido, Alabama, on The Nature Conservancy’s Splinter Hill Bog
    Preserve.
  • We will provide hands on training for conservation and restoration activities in the most biodiverse state east of the Mississippi River. Training will be given for fire fighting, prescribed burning, ATV/UTV use.
