General Project Description
If you are comfortable in an office as well as the back country and a love of the wild outdoors, then the Scotchmans Peaks straddling the Idaho/Montana border just south of Canada are calling you! The Summer 2012 Project and Outreach Coordinator will assist the Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness with coordinating volunteers and logistics for our summer hikes, trails project and outreach. Learn stewardship project management and non-profit outreach strategies. An easygoing, outgoing person with an ability to communicate clearly and effectively is required. Computer skills and a basic knowledge of trails are a plus; adaptability and a good sense of humor a must!
This position provides logistical and administrative assistance to the Program Coordinator with a focus on coordinating volunteers for our various summer stewardship projects and outreach events. Office tasks include processing hike, field trip, project signups; coordinating logistics with outing leaders and our agency partners; public relations efforts (facebook, listserve and press releases). Field work includes assisting hike and project volunteer leaders and participants with the skills and materials they will need to perform their tasks with appropriate follow up. Other responsibilities include assisting with education and outreach projects including developing collateral materials and participating in and recruiting and managing volunteers for events which engage the public.
Days of the week required will vary from week to week, most weeks will be Tue - Sat. We will try to balance individual preference with weekend event needs.

Hours: 30 weeks per week, minimum.
Rate of Pay: $12 per hour and up dependent on skills and experience
Report to Executive Director and Program Coordinator
Housing not included, but some assistance with affordable short term housing options may be available
Skills and Experience
Able to work with limited direct supervision
Able to organize logistics, volunteers and materials and follow through on details
Effective with written and verbal communications.
Can create and manage spreadsheets; sort and organize photos.
Experience with public relations including media and press releases a plus
Experience with creating content for and managing social media a plus
Graphic design skills a plus
Experience with event coordination a plus
Comfort with public speaking a plus
Physically capable, and comfortable, with being outside for a day in the field
Knowledge of local backcountry terrain helpful
Basic backcountry skills a plus
Basic knowledge of area wildlife a plus
Able to work flexible hours
Current and valid Driver’s License required
Dependable, rugged transportation a big plus
Recruitment, training and coordinating volunteers, materials, supplies and information.
Coordinating logistics with the USFS and our other community partners
Outreach and education to include press releases, managing listserve messages, facebook content and creating presentations.
May involve creating posters, flyers and other graphic materials
Compile photos by dates and location for photo contest
Create, update and maintain spreadsheets tracking hike and project results
Other tasks as assigned relating to managing each project
Takeaway: This position is a learning experience. The successful candidate will gain training and valuable insights while in the office and the field into many phases of wilderness advocacy and stewardship, including the politics and history of wilderness, effective public relations, effective social media marketing and networking, website maintenance, hands-on trail work, leadership experience, back-country experience and volunteer recruitment and coordination.
