Katmai 2009

S Ullman (AK 2009)
I'll never forget flying in a four-seat prop plane over gigantic Naknek Lake in Katmai NP for half an hour before circling over our new home in a cabin on the shore. Home was a cabin built by hand in the early twentieth century by a Lithuanian man named Roy Fure. He even managed to put up a windmill to bring electric lights to his cabin, 65 miles in the backcountry!

We built bog bridges out of native timber, fished for Salmon as they were running up the Brooks River, visited the site of the largest volcanic eruption on Earth during the twentieth century, and saw dozens of coastal brown bears, a few bald eagles, and a lone wolf. A truly amazing experience.
