Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge

C Oswalt (ME 2010)
I've spent two years as an intern at Maine Coastal Islands and its' been the greatest two years of my life. I lucked in to the position by chance. I was given a list of refuges to choose from and by sheer happenstance, I chose MCI. I spent my days doing trail work for the most part. Mixed in with some boat rides and rocky raft landings on sea bird nesting islands. No two days were ever really alike, but the diversity was exciting. There was never a dull moment.
Aside from holding Puffins, watching Bald Eagles fly, seeing the waves from hurricanes beat the shore, building trails, fixing roads, combating beaver destruction, and the plethora of other tasks, the greatest thing about this internship was the staff.
There is not a better group of people to work with in the world. Couple that with the amazing work, the idyllic sunny days, the smell of pine trees, the ocean breeze, and the colors of fall…and it's an amazing, unforgettable experience.
